Civil Engineer

CLH design, p.a., an award-winning civil engineering and landscape architecture firm located in Cary, NC is seeking a driven and detail oriented Civil Engineer. The ideal candidate will have demonstrated experience in all aspects of site design, including grading, erosion control, storm drainage, water and sewer utilities, and other related site improvements for high profile community and educational clients.  CLH design is a diverse, collaborative firm with young and young at heart professionals who thrive in our collaborative, team-oriented environment. We are seeking a mid-level Civil Engineer who is a curious, life-long learner with the patience and desire to nurture our young professionals. Required Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Civil Engineering or related field from an accredited College/University.
  • NC Licensed Professional Engineer (PE) or Engineer-in Training (EIT) on track to obtain PE within one year.
  • 4 to 10 years of experience specifically related to site design.
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills.
  • Highly motivated to successfully interact with clients, regulators, the public and design team members.
  • Ability and desire to collaborate with in-house Landscape Architects in small multi-disciplinary teams.
  • Must be able to pass a background check and be legally able to work in the United States of America.
  • Must have a valid Driver’s License.
  • Must have received the COVID-19 vaccine.

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Perform site design from conceptual through construction document phases utilizing AutoCAD software.
  • Perform design calculations (water, sewer and storm drainage hydraulic modeling, SCMs, erosion control, etc.) and prepare report figures and exhibits.
  • Perform review of drawings, specifications, calculations and other engineering documents.
  • Serve as an experienced engineering resource to junior staff engineers.
  • Generate correspondence, attend meetings and serve as a point of contact for clients, review agencies, contractors, the public, and design team members.
  • Prepare, submit and track required site and utility permits.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  • Ability to understand and follow highly complex written and oral instructions.
  • Knowledge of the principles and practices of civil engineering and utilities operations as applied to the development, design and construction.
  • Knowledge of current codes and regulatory standards governing the state’s building construction industry.
  • Ability to read, update and maintain various records and files.
  • Ability to access, operate and maintain various software applications.
  • Ability to clearly communicate information both verbally and in writing.
  • Skill in operating various specialized software and office equipment, e.g., large format plotters, AutoCAD-Civil3D, Hydraflow, Microsoft Office/Excel.
  • Ability to work in a team-oriented office and establish and maintain effective working relationships with departmental personnel, management, contractors, consultants and the general public.

Site Designer

We are also seeking a motivated and detail oriented Site Designer to assist with multiple site design projects. The candidate will get to work on a variety of public sector projects including K-12 and higher education campuses, municipal/community service facilities and parks. The candidate will assist in many aspects of design; including site analysis, conceptual design, construction plan development and specifications where applicable.

The ideal candidate will have 2-5 years of experience with a design background and an ability to produce high-quality graphics for a multiple portfolio of projects. He/she will be responsible for the site analysis and site design for projects under supervision of a Landscape Architect and/or Civil Engineer. Projects are deadline driven and the ability to work as part of a team while also having plenty of self-initiative is extremely important.

Required Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Landscape Architecture, Civil Engineering, or a related field from an accredited College/University.
  • Two to five years of experience in the landscape architecture or civil engineering industry.
  • Experience or knowledge of SketchUp, AutoCAD Civil 3D, and Adobe Creative Suite software.
  • Knowledge of site design principles (layout, grading, storm drainage, erosion control etc.).
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills.
  • Highly motivated to successfully interact with client and team members.
  • Must be able to pass a background check and be legally able to work in the United States of America.
  • Must have a valid Driver’s License.
  • Must have received the COVID-19 vaccine.

Duties and Responsibilities:
The candidate will perform a variety of design functions related to landscape architecture and civil engineering, including:

  • Perform drafting operations, including redline mark-ups, as related to site design.
  • Research and compile records and field data for the preparation of construction plans; develop and draft site development plans; develop permit applications and generate correspondence.
  • Maintain active communication with contractors, engineers, landscape architects, surveyors, government agencies, and the general public for any engineering, surveying or construction issues.
  • Perform other related duties as directed.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  • Ability to understand and follow highly complex written and oral instructions.
  • Basic knowledge of the principles and practices of civil engineering and landscape architecture, specifically as it relates to site design.
  • Proficiency in AutoCAD software.
  • Ability to clearly communicate information both verbally and in writing.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with departmental personnel, management, contractors, consultants and the general public.

Construction Administration Field Representative

Do you enjoy being in the field and watching projects come to life? Then our Construction Administration Field Representative is the position for you. The ideal candidate will have demonstrated project experience within the construction industry and have knowledge of site design principles.  The candidate can expect to work on a broad range of public sector projects including K-12 and higher education campuses, various municipal/community service facilities and parks.

Required Qualifications:

  • Minimum education of high school graduate, GED or technical college graduate. Bachelor’s Degree in Civil Engineering, Construction Administration, or a related field from an accredited college/university preferred.
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills.
  • Highly motivated to successfully interact with clients and team members.
  • Self-directed and able to work independently with minimal supervision.
  • Strong experience in the construction industry with construction management/administration training preferred.
  • Must be able to pass a background check and be legally able to work in the United States of America.
  • Must have a valid Driver’s License.

  • Review shop drawings and product submittal data.
  • Observe construction and generate written field reports.
  • Generate written punch-list inspections.
  • Review pay applications, RFI’s and change proposals.
  • Generate correspondence to contractors, clients and team members.
  • Maintain active communication with contractors, clients and team members for any construction related issues.
  • Ability to generate plan revisions and bulletin drawings using AutoCAD.

AutoCAD Technician 

We are also in search of an AutoCAD Technician to perform AutoCAD design for multiple aspects of site design. The candidate will get to work on public sector projects including K-12 and higher education campuses, various municipal/community service facilities and parks.

Under direction of a CLH Project Manager, the candidate will perform a broad variety of drafting duties utilizing Computer-Aided Design/Drafting (CAD).  The employee will perform at a minimum entry professional level and would be responsible for executing surveying, engineering and drafting functions as they relate to site design.  Work includes preparing preliminary drafts of construction projects, performing redline mark-ups, converting surveys, and generating accurate and detailed records of engineering data.

The ideal candidate will need to appreciate construction methods and have good communication, numeracy, and IT skills.  Projects are deadline driven.  The ability to work as part of a team while also having plenty of your own initiative is extremely important.

Required Qualifications:

  • Associates Degree with major coursework in Civil Engineering Technology or related field, or equivalent vocational certification with major coursework in Engineering or Engineering Technology.
  • Two years responsible experience in CAD engineering, construction, drafting and/or surveying work with strong experience with AutoCAD Civil 3D.
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills.
  • Highly motivated to successfully interact with clients and team members.
  • Entry-level experience in the construction industry with construction management/administration training preferred.
  • Knowledge of site design principles.
  • Must be able to pass a background check and be legally able to work in the United States of America.
  • Must have a valid Driver’s License.

Utilizing CAD software, the candidate will perform a variety of drafting functions related to civil engineering, including:

  • Perform survey and drafting operations, including redline mark-ups, as related to site design.
  • Research and compile records and field data for the preparation of construction plans; develops and drafts engineering plans and drawings; develop permit applications and generates correspondence.
  • Prepare site design drawings for public sector civil engineering and landscape architecture projects.
  • Maintain active communication with contractors, engineers, landscape architects, surveyors, government agencies, and the general public for any engineering, surveying or construction issues.
  • Perform other related duties as directed.
