New Hanover County Health and Human Services Building

CLH provided landscape architecture design, civil engineering, and permitting services for the New Hanover County (NHC) Health and Human Services Building project. This project is the redevelopment of the existing site to provide a new 103,000 SF facility for NHC Department of Social Services and NHC Health Department. This project included the phased demolition of the existing building, construction of a new building, a new 335-space parking lot and public transportation bus stop all while maintaining constant occupancy and access to the site by NHC. Once the new building was constructed and occupied, the existing building was demolished, and a new parking lot installed.

The high density of the project necessitated the inclusion of three underground stormwater detention systems, pervious concrete parking spaces, and a green roof to meet the strict local stormwater regulations. The design also included a 48-inch storm drain pipe to collect and bypass stormwater runoff from upstream properties through the site along with additional pedestrian connections, landscaping, and a small children’s play area.
