CLH served as lead landscape architect and civil engineer on the Lyons Farm Elementary School project. The Lyons Farm name honors the family that once owned the land, who were key contributors to the growth and economic opportunities for African American families in Durham.
From the mountains to the sea, the landscape of the Tar Heel state is apparent throughout the building. Hallways are named after mountain peaks and areas throughout Durham, but down each hallway there are also reminders of the Lyon family.
The existing site conditions were very complicated since the site slopes significantly to the Jordan Lake watershed. Wetlands, a public gas line, and large power lines restricted the adjoining building area. CLH worked closely with the design team and DPS to provide a compact footprint that sits on the site’s contours and provides landscape views.
