Town of Nags Head Dowdy Park Phase I – III Design Services

As the lead landscape architect and civil engineer on this project, CLH worked with the Town of Nags Head to provide Phase I Design and Development services for Dowdy Park. The Town purchased the five-acre site, formerly known as Dowdy’s Amusement Park. The park sits adjacent to Nags Head Elementary School and will provide much needed community gathering and recreational space for the Town.

Funding for the first phase of design and development was from several sources including a Trillium Health Resources Play Together Accessible Playground Grant of $750,000. CLH’s services included incorporating Trillium’s inclusive playground design requirements and collaborating with the Town’s Engineering department. Construction began in July 2017 which CLH assisted the Town in overseeing. CLH worked very closely with the Town on all aspects of the project including acquiring permits for the Town’s Site Plan approval and playground layout through Trillium.

Phase I design and construction services developed passive and active recreational uses such as inclusive park playground areas for all ages and needs, lawn seating and benches, on-site parking, stormwater management, and flexible spaces for interactive programming. Phase II/III design and construction services added the following elements: restroom facility, additional sidewalks, basketball court, pickleball court, two Bocce ball courts, horseshoes, entry area from the Bonnet/Wrightsville intersection, maintenance/ storage shed, wavy fences, and landscaping.
