East Carolina University Life Sciences and Biotechnology Building – LEED Silver

East Carolina University Life Sciences and Biotechnology Building – LEED Silver

CLH provided landscape architecture and civil engineering services for the Life Sciences and Biotechnology Building project. The design approach consists of placing the building in the west and northwest portion of the site to create a “gateway” to the ECU campus from Cotanche and Tenth Streets; as well as avoiding contaminated soils from previous development.

When the building was first designed, a parking deck was included. However due to budget constraints, the deck option was changed to a surface parking lot. The 230-space surface parking lot is located along Ninth Street to take advantage of ingress/egress from the lightly traveled Ninth Street and to create a strong pedestrian connection to Library Drive where most pedestrians will travel to and from main campus. The parking lot has permeable pavers to help reduce the overall impervious and to incorporate environmental design. There is also a large outdoor plaza for outdoor events, spillover from the large conference room, and dining for building staff.  In addition to internal and parking lot landscaping, the project also includes new streetscapes along Tenth, Cotanche and Evans. This project achieved LEED Silver certification.

NC State University Plant Sciences Building

NC State University Plant Sciences Building

The North Carolina State University Plant Sciences Building (PSB) will be the main facility for programs and researchers that are part of the North Carolina Plant Sciences Initiative (PSI). The PSI is based on an interdisciplinary systems approach and the PSB will leverage the state of North Carolina’s and NC State University’s agriculture and biosciences assets, concentrated in a world-class interdisciplinary research complex on Centennial Campus. CLH provided landscape architecture services for this project as part of the Flad Architects design team.

Our design included a south-facing exterior hearth with a covered “porch” which provides space for casual conversation, reflection, and study. The space is adjacent to the interior hearth, allowing functions to flow from inside to outside. The porch overlooks the multi-functional “commons” which includes a hardscape plaza and an open lawn. The space serves larger events, a display area for rotating outdoor exhibits, and a demonstration area for new crops or emerging technology. The six-foot grade change between the upper hearth area and lower terrace allowed for the use of ramps and steps to create distinct seating and activity spaces. The central ramp provides a universal access path from the southern portion of the site to the main entry on the east. Handrail lighting and strategic step lighting allow for safe pathways in the evening hours.

As project lead, CLH design coordinated five improvement projects for Duke University. The projects included a stormwater culvert replacement by McAdams, a new duct bank by AEI, intersection and traffic signal improvements by VHB, Chapel Drive streetscape improvements by CLH design, and invasive plant removal by River Works. For the Chapel Drive streetscape improvements project, CLH was responsible for the following tasks:

  • New granite curbing
  • Full depth asphalt replacement on Chapel Drive
  • New pavement striping
  • New sidewalks on either side of Chapel Drive
  • Coordination of OIT ductbank of 2-4” conduits coordinating the placement of two stormwater inlets associated with the culvert replacement
  • New streetscape plantings
  • Modification to the driveway and full depth asphalt replacement on approximately half of the rear parking lot serving the Office of News and Communications
  • Lighting (collaborate with AEI and Duke on locations, spacing and fixture selection).

As for the other projects being conducted by other firms, CLH served as the main project contact and made certain deadlines were met.

North Carolina State University Memorial Belltower Restoration at Henry Square

North Carolina State University Memorial Belltower Restoration at Henry Square

CLH provided civil engineering and landscape architectural services associated with the proposed renovation to the existing Memorial Belltower at NC State University. CLH’s design services included the restoration of site paving and landscape that were disturbed by the renovation and restoration of the belltower structure. The design included site modifications to provide universal accessibility to the plinth level and the tower structure, as well as correcting drainage and rising damp issues. The existing granite cobbles were reused both at the Belltower and behind the nearby Primrose Hall.  CLH worked closely with architecture firm Walter Robbs to make certain the site restorations are historically accurate and appropriate. The project was designed and constructed as a design-build project with New Atlantic Contracting.
